Summer Art Adventures (July 5 - Aug 19)

Please bring a lunch, snacks and dress in clothing that you do not mind if it becomes messy when attending day long workshops. All students must be potty trained.

At the Circus Ages - Georgia Renfroe
Monday, July 12 & Tuesday, July 13, 9:30-11:30 am, $25
Clowns, acrobats, elephants OH MY! We will become part of the circus through painting,
sculpture and drawing. Limit 6.

Colored Days Ages - Sara Hidalgo
Tuesday, July 27 & Wednesday, July 28, 9:30-11:30 am, $25
Are you feeling blue or maybe green? How do different colors make you feel? In this two-day workshop we will explore colors through painting and drawing. Limit 6.

Shapes aROUND us -Sara Hidalgo
Tuesday, August 3 & Wednesday, August 4, 9:30-11:30 am, $25
What can a circle be! In this two-day workshop we will explore all the shapes around us and learn to draw, paint and sculpt these forms. Limit 6.

At the Farm - Todd Lamond

Can you smell the chickens and hear the cows? We will explore the farm though our drawings, paintings and sculptures. Limit 6.

Story Telling - Georgia Renfroe

We will create storytellers out of fabric and other sculpting material. These characters once alive will then tell their own story through paintings and drawings. Limit 6.

Dragon Tales - Jessica Harris
Wednesday, July 7 & Thursday, July 8, 10am-2pm, $50
Travel in time to medieval days to discover castles, dragons, knights and more. Sculpt, draw and paint your way back. Limit 6.

At the Beach - Todd Lamond
Monday, July 12th, 10am – 2pm, $25
Seashells, sunshine, sand and friends! By the time we finish our paintings, drawings and sculptures you will have thought you had a day at the beach! Limit 6.

Asia Explored - Phuong Lai Matzker
Tuesday, July 13 – Thursday, July 15, 10am-2pm, $75
Chinese ceramics, Japanese scroll paintings and Persian miniature paintings are a few of the arts you will explore as you are inspired by this vast continent. Sculpt, draw and
paint as you learn. Limit 6.

Fasten your seat belt and get ready for a road trip! We will explore the U.S. through our paintings, drawings and sculptures. Limit 6.

Move with me -Thea Shapiro
Tuesday, July 20 - Thursday, July 22, 10am-2pm, $75
From windsocks to puppets to our very own bodies we will explore things that move. Using paint, paper, fabric, clay and a finger, foot or toe we will express ourselves. Limit 6.

Off to Egypt -Todd Lamond

Pyramids, mummies, scarabs and more! We will sculpt, paint and draw as we learn about this ancient culture. Limit 6.

Carnival - Phuong Lai Matzker

Brazil, Trinidad or your very own town or city has a carnival. We’ll make masks and noisemakers, play games and document the carnival through drawings and paintings. So let the party begin! Limit 6

Mars, Jupiter and the sun will be our muse! Oh and maybe a Martian or two as we sculpt paint and draw our vision of outer space. Limit 6.

The Factory - Heather Hudson
Tuesday, August 3 - Thursday, August 5, 10am -2pm, $75
We will create our own mini factory with all the necessary things such as workers, machines, and goods of course! Inspired by the great industrial building of Essex Art Center, what factory will you create? It can be anything your imagination desires! Limit 6.

Deer, birch trees, butterflies and more will inspire us. We will
paint, sculpt and draw what hides in the woods. Limit 6.

Lions, monkeys, giraffes and zebras are waiting for us. You will sculpt, draw and paint as we go on this adventure into the wild. Don’t forget your binoculars! Limit 6.

Great big buildings, lots of people and bright lights will excite us as we visit the city. Who knows what we may draw, sculpt and paint on our journey. Limit 6.

Antarctica - Phuong Lai Matzker

It may be summer here but bring your jacket because where we are going it will be cold and windy. Good thing it will only be in our imagination. What fun we will have meeting penguins and seals as we explore this continent at the south pole through our drawings, paintings and sculptures. Limit 6.

Animal in Art Ages 6-9 Todd Lamond 7
Mondays, 3:45-5:30 pm, July 5 – August 16, $80 From insects to elephants learn how animals have been used through history as inspiration and muse. Focus will be on drawing and painting animals. Bring in your favorite photos, stuffed animals and memories. Limit 8.

An Artists’ Sketchbook
ages 6-9 Jana Tarbox 7
Mondays, 3:45-5:30pm, July 5 – August 16, $80 This class will help you explore your vision and voice through the arts. Each class will begin with sketching or writing in your own art journal. From our response to our daily experiences or a quote from an artist, we will find inspiration. Our journal will be the stimulus for drawings, paintings and sculptures. Limit 8.

Tuesdays, 3:45-5:30 pm, July 6 – August 17, $90 Sculpt away to create magical people and places. Have fun with your imagination while you learn about clay. Limit 8.

Art Across the USA
ages 6-9 Mary Ann McArdle 7
Wednesdays, 3:45-5:30pm, July 7 – August 18, $80 Our journey through art will bring us to many wonderful sites, cultures and people from within our country’s borders. We will travel through space and time to learn more about our nation using “vehicles” of paint, pastel, clay and other media. Limit 8.

Heroes & Villains ages 6-9 Heather Hudson 7
Wednesdays, 3:45-5:30pm, July 7 – August 18, $80 Sculpt your very own heroes and villains out of various materials from clay to clothe to paper mache. You will design these new friends or foes and build them from head to toe with accessories and more. Limit 8.

Basic Drawing ages 6-9 Heather Hudson 7
Thursdays, 3:45-5:30pm, July 8 – August 19, $75 Focus on the basics of drawing. Deal with issues of light and shadow to describe form. Create drawings with values and elements of line and shading. Limit 8.

Basic Painting ages 6-9 Noelle Proulx-Decain 7
Thursdays, 3:45-5:30pm, July 8 – August 19, $80 Color mixing, paint application and the study of forms will allow you to represent objects from life and your imagination on paper and canvas. Limit 8.

Dream & Fantasy ages 7-10 Heather Hudson
Monday, July 5 - Thursday, July 8, 9am-3pm, $100 Chagall, Magritte, Dali and Kahlo are just a few who will inspire us. Our personal dreams will also be the spark that helps us create fantastical sculptures, outrageous drawings, surreal paintings and more. Limit 20.

Once Upon A Fractured Play ages 7-10 Grace O’Neill
Monday, July 12 – Thursday, July 15, $100 Students will run through basic dramatic exercises and learn about theater. They will learn to do improvisation, and practice short skits and monologues. Many of the games and activities will touch upon the theme of the camp-Fractured Fairy Tales. Students will write and perform their own fractured fairy-tale at the end of the course. They will also design their own sets, their own costumes, and their own props. Limit 10.

Women in the Arts
ages 7-10 Jessica Harris & Heather Hudson
Monday, July 12 - Thursday, July 15, 9am – 3pm, $100 Women have been involved in making art since the beginning of time. Through Artists: Betsy Ross, Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo, Beatrice Wood, Laylah Ali and more celebrate and explore the arts. Spend four days learning about past and present voices as you explore your own artistic voice. Work in clay, pencil, paint and other contemporary mediums. Limit 20.

Fashion Week a
ges 7-10 Heather Hudson & Grace O’Neill
Monday, July 19 - Thursday, July 22 9am -3pm, $100 Students will design their own “line” of wearable art that ranges from functional, to funky, to couture, inspired by their favorite fashion designers or their imaginations out of recycled materials. They will be exposed to examples of high fashion and commercial fashion, and some of the most popular new names in the industry via magazine and media. (Students are also encouraged to bring in their own favorite fashion mags.) At the end of the course they will have the opportunity to design and direct a collaborative runway fashion show. Limit 20.

Medieval Times
ages 7-10 Jessica Harris & Thea Shapiro
Monday, July 26 - Thursday, July 29, 9am-3pm, $100 Travel in time to the Middle Ages to discover castles, knights, mythical medieval beasts and more. Make your own family crest, sculpt dragons out of clay, draw castles, explore the world of calligraphy and create mosaics. Limit 20.

POP Art ages 7-10 Jana Tarbox & Jessica Harris
Monday, August 2 - Thursday, August 5, 9am-3pm, $100 Inspired by pop culture and mass production we will create comic books, silk-screened t-shirts, prints, collages and sculptural works. Learn what brought about the POP Art movement and some of the famous artists from the late fifties and on. Limit 20.

Things that Fly ages 7-10 Paul Prue
Wednesday, August 4th, 10am-2pm, $20/person Have fun building paper planes, flying saucers, rockets, and any thing that will fly! Students will test and race their creations at end of day. Bring lunch and snacks. Limit 12.

The Art of Latin America ages 7-10 Taina Vargas & Jessica Harris $100
Monday, August 9 - Thursday, August 12, 9am - 3pm, Inspired by the arts of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico that is often rooted in the spiritual and sophisticated indigenous cultures of these areas. Students will be introduced to various artists and styles of art from this region in order to create their our own interpretations in clay, ink, paint, pencil and more. Limit 20.

Puppet Playhouse ages 7-10 Taina Vargas & Thea Shapiro $100
Monday, August 16 - Thursday, August 19, 9am - 3pm We will make all sorts of puppets from finger puppets to sock puppets to big puppet heads that we can wear. As we build these wonderful teeny and large creations we will bring our puppets to life with character and dialogue. The course will end with a wonderful show for all to see presented with props and a set that we will design! Limit 20.

Urban Landscape Ages 10+ Noelle Proulx-Decain Thursday, August 5th, 9am-3pm, $25 Let Lawrence be your muse! Explore the energy of the city through paint and brush. We will warm up with sketches as we learn about famous landscape artists who were drawn to city scenes. Limit 8.

Plaster Ages 10+ Jana Tarbox Monday, August 9, 9am-3pm, $25 Rom liquid to bandages, plaster is a great tool to create sculptures. We will cast and form as we transform our ideas into objects. Limit 8.

Color Games Ages 10+ Dennis Hart Tuesday, August 10, 9am-3pm, $25 What fun can we have with color? Get ready to mix, match and explore. Instructor will teach you lots of techniques for mixing and reproducing colors so that you have a better understanding as you paint with acrylics. Limit 10.

Process not Product Ages 10+ Thea Shapiro $75 Tuesday, August 10 – Thursday, August 12, 9am-3pm, Do you love to explore materials but are frustrated being told what you have to make? In this class you will use different materials to push your creative mind. Through movies, books and challenges learn about artists who start their work through exploration. Limit 10.

Mosaic Shrines Ages 10+ Heather Hudson $50 Monday, August 16 & Tuesday, August 17, 9am-3pm, Broken bits of ceramic, rocks, buttons and glass will inspire. But what will your shrine hold? Create an icon or object out of clay that you will house in your mosaic shrine. Limit 8.

Pages & Books Ages 10+ Heather Hudson $50 Wednesday, Aug 18 & Thursday, Aug 19, 9am-3pm Incorporate drawing, painting, papermaking, and transfer processes into unique handmade books. Limit 10.

Self Portraits Ages 10+ Flyn Costello Monday, July 26, 9am-3pm, $25 How do you see yourself? With the aid of a mirror and instructor learn how to represent your self through pencil, oil pastel and or charcoal. Instruction will be given on proportions and mark making. Limit 10.

Monet’s Garden Ages 10+ Noelle Proulx-Decain Tuesday, July 27th, 9am-3pm, $25 Claude Monet was inspired by the water lily. What flower will be your muse? Learn about Monet as you explore flowers through oil pastels, watercolors or acrylics. Limit 10.

Explorations in Paint Ages 10+ Flyn Costello Wednesday, July 28, 9am-3pm, $25 Document, represent, and express your visions through paint. Explore color as it is applied to a surface such as paper, canvas or wood. Play with acrylics and watercolors while learning basic techniques and exploring non-traditional applications. Limit 10.

Decorative Painting Ages 10+ Noelle Proulx-Decain Thursday, July 29th, 9am-3pm, $25 Bring in a chair, jewelry box or other object to transform through paint and other materials. You will learn how to create your own textures and surfaces through paint. Limit 8.

Drawing Conclusions Ages 10+ Heather Hudson Monday, August 2, 9am – 3pm, $25 Be challenged by objects, ideas and various drawing mediums. You will have to draw the conclusion as you study still life objects, interiors, photographs or mental puzzles that are presented to you. Limit 10.

Animals Explored Ages 10+ Robin Hansen Tuesday, August 3, 9am-3pm, $25 Through pencil, ink and watercolor bring animals to life on paper. Students will work from magazine images or photographs that they bring of their pets. Learn how to portray the personalities of these wild and domestic critters. Limit 8.

Architects’ Delight Ages 10+ Dan Fionte Monday, July 5 - Thursday, July 8, 9am-3pm, $100 Learn about perspective, line drawing and shading as you explore the world of architecture. Work with pencil and ink as you discover the various styles from classical to modern and then to impossible. Frank Lloyd Wright and MC Escher are a few that will inspire you. Once we learn the concepts of architecture we will build a model out of board and other materials. Limit 10.

The Lost Art of Photography Ages 10+ Taina Vargas Wednesday, July 7 & Thursday, July 8, 9am-3pm, $60 Have you ever used a dark room? Come and explore the wonder of science through the art of photography. Learn how to shoot, develop and print all in two days! We will provide the film and paper. Bring 35mm camera or inquire about borrowing one from EAC. Limit 7.

Cartoon Characters Ages 10+ Dan Fionte $50 Wednesday, July 14 & Thursday, July 15, 9am-3pm, Do you love to draw and create your own characters? In this workshop you will develop your own character with the aid of instructor. You will learn about foreshortening, storyboarding and coloring. Limit 10.

Batik Ages 10+ Flyn Costello Monday, July 19, 9am-3pm, $25 Explore the ancient art of Batik; using wax resist and dye to create textural works on fabric. Please bring in sketches or photographs for inspiration. Limit 8.

Family Portraits Ages 10+ Noelle Proulx-Decain Tuesday, July 20, 9am-3pm, $25 Bring in photographs of your family. You will learn how to compose, draw and paint your very own interpretation of your family through acrylics on canvas. Limit 8.

Charcoal Ages 10+ Flyn Costello Wednesday, July 21, 9am-3pm, $25 Focus on shading, texture and composition as you explore the world of charcoal. Learn the fluidity of this medium and how you can create energy and emotion through various marks. Limit 10.

A Day with Dalí Ages 10+ Noelle Proulx-Decain Thursday, July 22, 9am-3pm, $25 Salvador Dalí is famous for his melting clocks and other juxtaposed and morphed objects. What object will you transform as you learn about the life of Dalí? Students will work in acrylics on canvas board. Limit 10.
