Cephalophoric Smugglers
New paintings by Paul Endres
Paul Endres’ work is ongoing series of paintings and comics, depicting events of a single sprawling narrative that takes place in the wake of a mysterious modern catastrophe: the physical materialization and collapse of history. Fascinated by the fictional nature of human history and how it is perpetuated, Endres’ work is dedicated to commemorating the events of The American Burden, a fictitious catastrophe of his own creation.
The paintings are memorials to the historical events and figures of this alternate reality. This place, Burden America, exists in order to lay bare the fictional nature of all histories and our part in perpetuating them. Cephalophoric Smugglers, offers a more focused look at a few particular inhabitants who are united (and divided) in their struggle to control a powerful relic, the severed head of the late David Ocampo.
Paul Endres received his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2011. His work was included in an exhibition at La Montagne Gallery in 2012, the same year he received an artist grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. In Spring 2014, his work will be shown at Childs Gallery, Boston in a solo exhibition. In 2011, The Boston Globe featured Paul and his work in “High Five: Five Young Artists to Watch”. Paul teaches classes for children and adults at Essex Art Center.
